Panleukopenia Notice

Keeping Cats Homed has recently confirmed a case of Panleukopenia in a litter of kittens surrendered from a colony in West Prince. 

Panleukopenia (also known as Feline Distemper) is a very contagious disease that is often fatal in unvaccinated cats/kittens.  This case has been contained to one litter of kittens and is not an outbreak.  We are working closely with our veterinarian to ensure the kittens that have recovered continue to do well and that the disease is contained and will not spread to any unvaccinated kittens.  Thankfully we have protocols in place to protect our kittens and isolate disease such as in this case.  These protocols have been effective in preventing an outbreak. 

Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, a deep clean of the area the kittens were kept will be done over the next couple of weeks and KCH will not be accepting any new kittens until the spring of 2022 when kitten season begins.  We feel this is the safest way to prevent any more illness.

There are still kittens in the program that will be posted for adoption once it is safe to do so and following the advice of our veterinarian.  Any kittens that have recently been adopted have not been exposed, they are protected by vaccines, and are not at risk of becoming sick with this disease.

Panleukopenia can be prevented with regular vaccinations.  KCH, following the advice of our veterinary team, strongly recommends vaccines at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age and kittens in our program are not placed for adoption until they are protected by vaccines.  If you are a cat owner please ensure your cats are fully vaccinated as soon as possible to prevent any risk of your cat contracting Panleukopenia or other diseases.   This is a preventable disease.
